Carers Week

8 - 14th June

Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges unpaid carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. It also helps people who don't think of themselves as having caring responsibilities to identify as carers and access much-needed support.

Our theme for Carers Week 2026 is Building Carer Friendly Communities. This will highlight the impact carer friendly communities can have in making a real and lasting difference to the lives of carers everywhere. The campaign will be brought to life by thousands of individuals and organisations taking action to ensure more communities understand, recognise, and empower carers.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.

York Carer Centre is an independent charity and a network member of the national Carers Trust. They work in partnership with carers, statutory and voluntary organisations to ensure unpaid carers throughout York have access to confidential information, advice and support. They work with carers to influence positive change in service delivery with local government, employers, schools and health providers. Read more in their really handy leaflet here. York Carer Centre also runs a Wellbeing Group for Mental Health Carers, read more here about what they sessions involve and when there are run. You can call them on 01904 715490.

You can let us know you are a carer by using the prioryCARE form and choose the General Enquiries tile.

You can also call our Patient Central team or speak to one of our Patient Care Navigators at reception sites who can update your records. It is useful to know if you are a carer as we can then make sure we provide you with support where needed and invite you to have a flu jab each year.
